Law Enforcement Expert Inspires FBI Agents to Use Their Power for the Right Reasons
Quantico, VA - (April 24, 2008) - On April 8, 2008 a group of FBI agents gathered at the National FBI Academy of Virginia to hear law enforcement expert Ken Betterton deliver a presentation designed to raise their consciousness about the ways in which they use their authority. Focusing on issues including emotional intelligence, relationship building, reinvention, and motivational coaching, Betterton challenged the agents to, as he says, "use the power invested in them for the collective common good."
"Law enforcement personnel are in a unique position as relates to the rest of society. They have been given extraordinary power over others in the community in order to provide an agreed upon quality of life for all." says Betterton, a former U.S. Marine and state police officer. "Law enforcement officials are charged with the responsibility of ensuring the public safety and are given the authority to enforce the laws of the jurisdiction which they serve. With this power comes the responsibility to use it correctly. Using your power to serve the greater common good is not a topic that is discussed very often in the law enforcement community, yet it at the core of everything we do. Our motto is "to serve and protect". In my opinion, the true meaning of leadership is to understand the honor of service for others," Betterton says.
Betterton's presentation zeroed in on the challenges and the competing priorities that make it difficult for law enforcement personnel to focus on these higher goals. Kelly O'Malley, the Program Manager for the agency commented on Ken's performance, "Ken's presentation provides an excellent opportunity for me to continually evaluate my behaviors as they relate not only to personal relationships, but also in professional relationships as a leader and supervisor. He demonstrates examples supporting the specific points, which makes it easy for me to visualize myself in those situations. I am a better communicator in my personal life, as well as in my professional environment because of the skills presented in Ken's program. Thank you, Kenny B."
Betterton challenged workshop participants to assume an attitude of personal leadership in order to build trust and positively influence their coworkers so that they are in a position to motivate the organization as a whole. "This is how you become aware of your personal power," says Betterton. "Having great intensity and energy that is based on your personal strengths is where you get your power. In order to effectively lead an organization, you need to be in touch with who you are, your personal strengths, your internal motivation and your external goals. Self awareness and self understanding enable you to positively influence those around you."
"Power and ego are two things that can easily cloud the judgment of those we put in charge of the welfare of our communities," says Betterton. "I help people who are in positions of authority understand that giving your best to the community you serve means dedication and commitment to the right values and playing a leadership role in that community is the most effective way a law enforcement officer can give service to its empowering jurisdiction."
